Every day our firm takes steps to protect the rights of all employees to be free from oppression and discrimination. We know the work landscape is not fair or protective of women, BIPOC, and the LGBTQ employees. Now, with the decision in Dobbs, the global landscape in this country is not fair or protective and is moving backward. Thomas warns us that more regression of rights is potentially coming. We believe him. The time to act is now. We can rest when our Supreme Court and its decisions reflect the values our constitution promises.

That’s a scary situation for American democracy.

We hope this passes in the Senate as well!

The House has passed the Equality Act, which would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to protect people from being discriminated based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing and other services as well as access to public accommodations such as restaurants.

Today we celebrate Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. and think about what he might say about our times:

“Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers."

Maureen is honored to be spotlighted today!

Happy Wise Women! Today our first spotlight of the year is on Maureen Holland, founder of Holland & Associates, PC. Maureen is a civil rights employment lawyer and her firm represents current and former employees with legal problems, including employment discrimination (race, gender/sex, age, disability, national origin, etc. claims), severance agreements, non-compete agreements, breach of contract, and other employment-related issues.

In addition to her impressive daily work she is also known for her involvement in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark civil rights case in which the fundamental right to marry was guaranteed to same-sex couples. Holland was a member of the Tennessee plaintiffs’ legal team in Tanco v. Haslam, which was combined at the U.S. Supreme Court as Obergefell.
