The GAO just released a new report, VA Disability Benefits: Additional Oversight and Information Could Improve Quality of Contracted Exams for Veterans.

Key findings raise real concerns:

* Over $2 million in incorrect incentive payments went to contractors because VA’s Medical Disability Examination Office lacked proper validation procedures.

* Special Focused Reviews for complex claims (like TBI, MST, and Gulf War Illness) are behind schedule, even though these exams are especially prone to errors.

* Examiners have no direct way to provide feedback to VA—despite saying that contractor processes often leave their concerns unaddressed.

Why does this matter? Disability exams are the backbone of VA claims decisions. When exams are low-quality—or oversight fails—veterans can be denied or delayed the benefits they’ve earned.

The GAO made four recommendations, including validating financial incentive calculations, redoing missed quality reviews, and creating a direct feedback mechanism for examiners. VA agreed with most, but progress will need to be tracked closely.
