October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
One of the most important things we can do this month is broaden our understanding of what domestic violence can look like.
It is not always physical. Abuse can also involve financial control, intimidation, isolation, threats, monitoring, or creating an environment in which someone is afraid to make ordinary decisions.
For a person living in that situation, leaving may not be simple. Concerns about children, finances, housing, safety and the future can make every decision feel complicated.
That is why information matters.
If you or someone you know may be experiencing domestic violence, confidential resources are available:
💜 National Domestic Violence HotlineCall 800-799-SAFE (7233)Text START to 88788
💜 New York State Domestic & Sexual Violence HotlineCall 800-942-6906Text 844-997-2121
💜 New York CityCall 1-800-621-HOPE (4673)or call 311
If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
