2 Milly, the creator of the “Milly Rock Dance” was profiled in this piece for which I was interviewed by the New York Daily News regarding the current state of disrepair at Rikers Island, and the humanitarian crisis it is creating.
Conditions are unsafe for the inmates and for the guards being tasked to protect them. Corrections Officers are being required to work double and triple shifts, as much as 24 hours in a row, and neither the staff nor the inmates are being provided appropriate water or food. Inmates are not being provided food, water, medicine, medical services or basic sanitary necessities. Many are going more than a month without setting foot outside.
Regardless of your personal feelings on crime and punishment, no human being deserves to be forced to live - or work - in these conditions. My law firm - Mottola Uris Law - is trying to get the word out about these horrendous conditions in the hopes that the attention articles like these generate might lead to action by city and state government. Hopefully Governor Hochul cares more about human rights than her predecessor.
