💜 SICKLE CELL PAIN IS REAL. AND SOMETIMES THE BIGGEST BATTLE IS GETTING SOMEONE TO BELIEVE IT.

Sickle Cell Disease affects approximately 100,000 people in the United States, and more than 90% of those affected are Black or African American. It is an inherited blood disorder that can cause red blood cells to become hard and sticky, blocking blood flow and causing severe pain and serious complications throughout the body.

A pain crisis isn't simply "being uncomfortable."

People living with Sickle Cell may experience sudden, severe pain that can be sharp, stabbing, throbbing, and debilitating. And here's something important: there is no single lab test or vital sign that can prove or disprove a person's Sickle Cell pain crisis. The patient's report of their pain matters.

Unfortunately, many Black patients living with Sickle Cell have described being dismissed, undertreated, or treated with suspicion when seeking help for pain. Research and federal health agencies have acknowledged that stigma and racial bias can contribute to delays in care and pain treatment.

And this is where advocacy becomes critical.

Sometimes the problem isn't that you didn't report the issue. Sometimes you're simply talking to someone who doesn't have the authority to resolve it.

If you or your loved one is experiencing a Sickle Cell pain crisis:

1. Ask for the charge nurse.
Don't argue endlessly with one staff member. Clearly explain the concern and ask for the person responsible for supervising the unit.

2. Ask the provider directly about the treatment plan.
Try saying:
"What is the plan for managing this patient's pain, and what is the expected timeframe?"

3. Ask for your concerns to be documented in the medical record.
Be specific about what happened, when you requested help, and what response you received.

4. Ask for Patient Relations or a Patient Advocate.
These departments exist to help address concerns about communication, patient rights, and the care experience.

5. If you believe there is a serious unresolved safety concern, ask who handles risk management or patient safety concerns at that hospital.
Use clear, factual language. Explain exactly what you are concerned about and why.

6. Document everything.
Write down names, titles, times, what was requested, and what response was given. Advocacy becomes much stronger when you can provide a clear timeline.

7. Go prepared whenever possible.
The CDC recommends working with your provider to create an individualized pain management plan and bringing it electronically or in print when emergency care is needed.

For families and paid caregivers:

Your job isn't to become combative.

Your job is to become strategic.

Stay calm.

Ask direct questions.

Document names and times.

Move concerns up the appropriate chain of command.

And remember: "I already told someone" is not always the end of advocacy.

Sometimes you need to ask:

"Who is the appropriate person to speak with who has the authority to address this concern?"

That question alone can change the direction of a situation.

At AGR CARES, we believe caregivers should know more than how to provide care.

They should know how to navigate systems.

Because being heard is important.

But knowing WHO needs to hear you can be even more powerful.

💜 Knowledge is advocacy. Preparation is protection. And sometimes getting results means knowing which door to knock on next.

💜 September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month 💜

This month, AGR is committed to helping our community become more informed, prepared, and compassionate.

Sickle Cell Disease isn't just a diagnosis - it's a lifelong condition that not only impacts the individual diagnosed but their families and caregivers in ways many people never see.
Behind every pain crisis, doctor's appointments, or difficult day there is often someone providing care, advocating, researching, comforting and trying to hold it all together.

This is why awareness matters. And this month especially we want you to know AGR is here for you. We will be shring education, resources, caregiver perspectives, and conversations surrounding this disease.

Medication-Related Fall Prevention

Medication-related fall risks are medications or combinations that can cause dizziness, sedation, low blood pressure, impaired balance or confusion , increasing the chances of a fall.

Pay particular attention after a new medication or dosage is started. Always consult with the physician and NEVER stop prescribed meds abruptly.

You can have the local pharmacist or clinician review the complete medication list including any OTC meds and supplements. If changes need to be made they can make adjustments or safer alternatives.

Keep in mind pharmacists may discuss this with you generically but other professionals may require you to have medical release if you are inquiring for a private client or a loved one.

A fall doesn't have to happen before you make the house safer.

Walk through your loved one's or client's home and look for:

🚨 Loose rugs
🚨 Poor lighting
🚨 Cluttered walkways
🚨 Cords across walking paths
🚨 Slippery bathroom surfaces
🚨 Frequently used items stored too high
🚨 Furniture that makes walking difficult
🚨 Missing handrails or grab bars where appropriate

Don't just look at the house.

Look at the house from their perspective.

Could they see that rug?

Could they safely get to the bathroom at night?

Can they reach what they need without climbing?

Could they get through the hallway with their mobility device?

Small environmental changes can make a major difference.

Don't wait for an accident to happen. Prevention is key.

Safe Transfers: Protecting Yourself Too

Your loved one or client isn't the only one that can get hurt during a transfer. You can too. Whether you're a CNA transferring a patient from bed to wheelchair or a loved one helping a family member stand from a recliner, transfers can turn dangerous very quickly. As caregivers we are sometimes so focused on keeping the other person from falling there we forget about our own body.

Here are some tips to remember :

💛 Don't try to physically "lift" someone who cannot safely bear their own weight.
💛 Keep your feet positioned for stability.
💛 Avoid twisting your back while assisting.
💛 Give clear instructions before beginning the transfer.
💛 Remove obstacles from the transfer path.
💛 Use prescribed mobility equipment appropriately.
💛 If a transfer requires more assistance than you can safely provide, STOP, ASK FOR HELP AND WAIT!

BEING A GOOD CAREGIVER OR CNA DOESN'T REQUIRE YOU DESTROYING YOUR OWN BODY TO PROVIDE CARE.

YOUR SAFETY MATTERS TOO 💛

***DISCLAIMER: This post is general education. And not to be considered individualized transfer training.***

Traveling with aging parents may look different, but it doesn’t have to stop. ❤️✈️
With the right accommodations, support, and planning, many seniors can still enjoy vacations, family trips, cruises, and creating beautiful memories with the people they love.

Sometimes our parents simply need a little extra help navigating airports, managing medications, mobility assistance, companionship, or someone trustworthy to accompany them along the way. And sometimes… caregivers and adult children just need a well-deserved break. 💆🏽‍♀️

That’s where I come in. I offer white glove es**rt services for seniors — providing compassionate, professional assistance for travel, appointments, outings, or companionship while families take time to rest and recharge. Whether your loved one needs a travel companion or a trusted sitter while the kids go on vacation, I’m here to help make life easier and less stressful for everyone involved.

Because life happens, parents age, and you deserve peace of mind too. 🤍

Does Mom need a pedicure… or a podiatrist? 😭😂

Because at a certain age we’re no longer just “booking self-care”… we’re doing a full wellness investigation.

Let’s be honest—there was a time when a pedicure meant cute polish, a little foot soak, and gossiping about somebody’s cousin’s business.

Now?

We’re checking feet like:
“Hmm… is that dryness… or a medical condition? 👀”

Here are some signs Mom might need to upgrade from nail salon to foot specialist:

👣 The “callus” has its own ZIP code
👣 Toenails are starting to identify as armor plating
👣 She says “I’ll just soak them at home” and nobody has seen her feet since 2019
👣 The nail tech starts whispering “you might want to see a doctor”
👣 Foot pain but she still insists on wearing heels because “beauty is pain, baby”

Meanwhile Mom is still asking for a “simple pedicure” like everything is normal 😭

Listen… we love a good spa day, but sometimes self-care is not a polish change… it’s a professional intervention.

So tell me the truth…
Are you booking a PEDICURE 💅🏽
or making a PODIATRIST appointment 🩺👣

Tag your mom… or don’t… she might get offended 😭
