The Department of Justice’s U.S. Trustee Program (USTP) recently obtained a judgment requiring a nationwide consumer law firm to refund a total of $196,527 in legal fees to dozens of clients based on the firm’s deficient services and other violations of the Bankruptcy Code.

SCAM ALERT: The Office of the United States Trustee is aware of a scam being perpetrated on debtors and possibly others. In this scam, the victim receives a fraudulent phone call claiming to be from the bankruptcy court. The scammer demands a payment, via Zelle, Venmo, or some other method. The scammer may sound convincing and use publicly available information such as addresses, names of court officials, trustees, and judges. Additionally, the scammer may use technology to spoof the phone number, so it appears on caller ID to originate from the court or a government agency. Please alert your clients to this scam and should anyone have a client that is a victim, please report it to our office at your earliest convenience. Thank you and have a good day.
