Beyond proud of Mabel for competing in the qualifier for the 78th USGA Jr Amateur Qualifier at Emerald Valley. 6071 yardage, 75.7 rating, 122 slope.
She made the turn at even par on a course where greens offer almost no margin for error. Miss by a little, and the ball can roll well away from the hole, often leaving a delicate chip just to save par.
Mabel handled all of that beautifully on the front 9 and put herself right where she wanted to be - in contention.
The back 9 brought a few costly misses that added 4 strokes in a hurry. That’s championship golf. At this level, a shot or two makes all of the difference.
What constantly impresses me the most about Mabel, is what happens after a miss. She doesn’t let those mistakes define the rest of her round. She stayed composed, trusted her game, and continued to compete. Her ability to reset and move forward after adversity is one of her greatest strengths.
She finished with a 79, +7. The 6th lowest score - including ties. There were competitors from as far away as Thailand and China.
Mabel, you just competed in a USGA qualifier, made the turn at even par, handled a championship setup, and proved you belonged there! After playing golf for only 4 years!?!
A huge thank you to her caddie, whose support and steady guidance were invaluable. Mabel is excited for the continued partnership as she pursues bigger goals and levels.
Mabel’s athletic talent is undeniable. Her drive, steadiness and clarity of purpose amplify every gift she has. She knows what she wants and she doesn’t waver when the path gets difficult. She approaches challenges with a level of emotional maturity, self-awareness, and perspective that many people never fully develop. At 16, she has things squared away in her head that can’t be taught by a coach or measured on a scorecard.
Mabel, you are remarkable and a force ❤️⛳️
