I had the pleasure of speaking with Ms. Peralez’s English class of Weslaco East High School, today.

I was tasked with explaining how ECR “Extended Constructed Response,” a written response supported with evidence, a skill students are currently being taught in school, how it connects to work in the legal profession.

It was fun. Thanks for these gifts Wildcats!

Quite a storm last night. Hope all property is fine and well. Be sure to read up on your home insurance policy concerning rights, and prompt obligations.

As we enter hurricane season,

Plan ahead and make safe,

And learn about Your agreement with the insurance company that is insuring your home.

some things to know:

1. Your home insurance policy is a contract between yourself and the insurance company. You and the insurance company each have duties under the contract. Be sure to read your policy.

2. Pursuant to your policy, there may be relief available for you that you have not been aware of (i.e. removal of fallen trees from peril of Windstorm or Hail.)

3. You, the Policyholder, has a duty to provide prompt notice of loss and to protect the property from further damage, failure to do so can cause issues in seeking relief.

4. You can dispute coverage or the scope and amount of loss to property; you do not have to take the insurance companies word as final.

5. Most insurance policies provide a process through which you can dispute the amount of loss you suffered and for the filing of a lawsuit.

Yesterday we participated in career day at Evangelina Garza Elementary.

All students said:
1. That they were good listeners (the teachers weren’t sure about it), and
2. That they gave good advice to their friends.

Two key characteristics that make a good lawyer, the students already have.
