Easterling Law, PLLC

Easterling Law, PLLC Easterling Law is a very successful family law firm located in the Charlotte, NC, area. We focus on divorce and custody and providing legal services.

My parents went through a harsh divorce, and I grew up watching all of it. This experience is one of the many reasons I was compelled to study sociology and psychology in college before achieving my Juris Doctorate. In my life today, I have created a loving marriage with children, family unity, and all the adventuring I can handle. We hike, backpack, swim, play with our golden doodle, and travel.

My husband and I have a son of our own, and I am a stepmom to a lovely daughter from my husband’s previous marriage. We welcome a healthy relationship with her mother and even spend holidays together as a blended family. I infuse that same sense of togetherness into my law practice. Even if it’s time for a change, that doesn’t mean everyone must suffer through meaningless pain. Whether you’re already in the divorce process, or just coming to a tough decision, I can help you.

Sadly, you will likely not be with your children all the time after a marriage ends.

Take that time and invest yourself.💆‍♂️ If you don’t, then you will likely carry over residual feelings from your marriage into your new life as a co-parent.

This is a common mistake and one that could cost you more than you realize.

⚠️*Warning - the following caption may be triggering for some people who have experienced or are experiencing domestic violence* ⚠️

🤔 Did you know that the state of North Carolina recognizes TWO types of domestic violence injunctions (also called protective orders)?

Each one must be issued by a judge👨‍⚖️. A person who has shared a “personal relationship” with you may be legally bound by the court order if the person has caused harm (or attempted to cause harm) to you or your minor child.

The harm could involve:
👉 bodily injury
👉 behavior that places you or a family member in fear of serious injury
👉 continued harassment
👉 or a sexual offense

Victims without a personal relationship to the perpetrator should apply for a no-contact order against stalking and harassment.

It can be hard to predict how your children will react to the news of your divorce - especially at certain ages.

When it comes to telling them about your divorce - prepare for the unexpected and do your best to validate your child’s feelings instead of dismissing them.

Set the tone so they feel comfortable discussing their feelings with you through the process.

“Marriage” and “Parenting” are TWO different things and should be separate when co-parenting.

🤷 What does this mean exactly!?

These two roles should not blur together just because you are divorced. Don’t put your child in the middle of you and your former spouse. This can come in many forms—and you may not even be aware you’re doing it. ‼️

1️⃣ Your child should never see any anger you feel towards your former spouse. Children only see mothers and fathers. They are not going to share in your resentment.

2️⃣ Young kids are not ready for the emotional challenges and complexities of your adult issues. Using words like: Judge, Court Order, etc; are also inappropriate for a child; they should be blissfully unaware of your court case.
