Five New York car dealerships, including three on Long Island, have agreed to return more than $900,000 in restitution to nearly 6,400 customers after state prosecutors alleged they unlawfully sold credit repair and identity theft protection services to consumers who bought or leased vehicles.

The dealers also agreed to pay $135,000 in penalties to the state, Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman said.
Caveat Emptor and Buyers Beware! I am a consumer law advocate and get calls all the time from innocent people who get scammed out of thousands of dollars by deceptive dealers who add on all sorts of service contracts and fees or alter the terms of the deal without the knowledge of the consumer. You need to read everything and understand the terms before you buy or lease a new or used car, or leave the dealer and return with someone more familiar with these complex transactions. Don't let your guard down or be exhausted after hours and sign without reading all the papers. Never sign on a tablet or ipad as that is another means of fraud and be sure to leave with copies of everything. Do not sign an arbitration clause. Feel free to call me or another lawyer before signing anything or if nyou think you got scammed.
