Serving as State Bar Liaison to the American Indian Law Section (AILS) is one of the most enjoyable and interesting roles that I play as a Commissioner. Michigan has more Federally recognized Indian Tribes than any other state east of the Mississippi River. Many of our major highways are based off of Indian trade routes. We have 12 sovereign, independent tribal courts right here in Michigan. Here is a pic from the AILS Annual Meeting last August, and map of our state Tribes. Gdm

St. Clair County Bar Association's annual meeting was terrific. Michelle Easter was recognized for her years of dedication to the bar as out going President, and Brianna Monzo was elected incoming bar President. We were especially honored to be joined by the 90th President of the State Bar of Michigan, and Honorary Council for the Republic of Ireland, Joseph McGill. My fellow Commissioner, Sherriee Detzler and ABA Board of Governors member, Thomas Rombach were also in attendance and at our table with John L. Livesay and me. Gdm

On June 21, 22, State Bar of Michigan leaders and Tribal Court leaders of the Natowaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi (NHBP) gathered at the Pine Creek Reservation near Battle Creek to learn and exchange ideas about Native American culture and their justice system which is sovereign from US State and Federal Courts. Friday, NHBP Chief Judge Pope and her staff hosted State Bar leadership for a wonderful meal at Firekeepers. Saturday, we visited their Tribal Court and then attended a Pow Wow. With 30 years in the legal field and 25 in private practice, I found the experience and exchange (which is ongoing) to be inspiring. Gdm
