This is valuable information for anyone 65 or older or anyone who helps people in this demographic. It’s the new ā€œIndiana Medicare Birthday Ruleā€.

Starting January 1, 2026, Indiana Medicare Supplement policyholders age 65 and older will have an annual 60-day guaranteed issue period that starts on their birthday. Applications for changing coverage using this new rule can be signed starting January 1, 2026.

The Birthday Rule allows a Medicare Supplement member to change their insurance company while keeping the same existing plan type, without medical underwriting. This means people will be able to shop for better rates or service without worrying about answering health questions.

Coverage under this new rule becomes effective on the first day of the month following the person’s birthday. A person has 60 days from their birthday to make the switch.

Note that a person must keep the same Medicare Supplement plan letter (for example, Plan N to Plan N). No changes to a different plan type using this rule will be allowed.

If a person wants to switch to a different plan letter, they will need to complete the health history section of the insurance application and pass medical underwriting.

Also, this new rule ONLY applies to Indiana. People in other states should check what the rule is in their respective state.

Please note that I am not giving any legal advice. I am sharing information for you to discuss with your own trusted advisors and counsel.

Please share.

If you think your Last Will & Testament is the only document you need in your estate plan, we need to talk!

There are documents that I can prepare for you that enable you to protect and preserve assets for your intended heirs, but you need to execute these documents at least five years before you require long term care. Don't wait until it's too late!

Did you know that if your child moves into your home to help take care of you, and their care prevents you from requiring long term care at least two years sooner than your actual admission into long term care, you can transfer your home to that child without a penalty? Even if the transfer is within five years (the look-back) of your application for Medicaid.
