Giving assets to your children or other loved ones during your lifetime may seem like a simple way to make things easier later.

Sometimes it can be a helpful part of an estate plan. Other times, it can create unexpected tax consequences, affect future planning options, expose an asset to someone else’s creditors, or mean giving up more control than you intended.

Before transferring a home, adding someone to a deed, or making a significant financial gift, it is important to understand how that decision fits into the bigger picture.

The best strategy depends on your assets, your goals, and what you may need in the future.

If you’re considering gifting assets during your lifetime, I can help you understand how that decision may affect your broader estate plan.

Most people think having a will means their estate plan is complete.

It’s a good start. But it may not do everything people expect.

A will only takes effect after death and typically goes through probate.
A trust, on the other hand, can be used during your lifetime and may help avoid that process entirely.

They serve different purposes.
And for many people, the right plan includes both.
