AI keeps getting framed as either utopian or dystopian.
We need to get rid of this “win-lose” mindset.
I started wrestling with this idea 3 years ago when my son chose AI as the subject for his capstone project.
He focused on how it would impact the future, and I remember feeling unsettled when he said the future of AI was one of two choices, like he had to pick a side.
So we talked about what happens when people get told there is no space in the middle.
Generally, they’re pushed into binaries. Similar to the legal system itself. Our judicial system teaches people that there is a “guilty” or “not guilty.”
AI is starting to follow that same path. Either it saves the world or ruins the world.
And neither story reflects the reality of how most people behave or how most innovation unfolds.
The truth is usually somewhere between those extremes. The middle gives us room to think, question, and build responsibly.
