Someone you love just got arrested. Now what? Most families' first call is to a bondsman - but understanding how bonds actually work in Georgia can save you real money. Our new guide covers how judges set bond, what a bail bondsman charges (and what you don't get back), what happens if you miss court, and why calling a defense attorney early matters. Read it here:

Arrested in Cobb County? Here's how bail bonds work in Georgia, what a bondsman charges, what happens if you miss court, and why calling a defense attorney early can save you money.

You move three miles away. You update Amazon, your bank, and your mom.

You don't update the clerk of court.

Six weeks later there's a warrant for your arrest β€” because in Georgia, the court mails your court date to the last address on file, and mail sent to that address counts as notice whether you ever saw it or not.

Nobody was hiding. Somebody was unpacking.

The fix takes about ten minutes. The alternative takes a bond, a license reinstatement fee, and a very awkward conversation with your boss.

We broke down how it happens, what Georgia law actually says, and how to fix it before it costs you:

Moving with a pending Georgia case? If the clerk has your old address, the court date notice goes there β€” and a bench warrant follows. Here's the 10-minute fix.

"The police want to talk to me. I didn't do anything wrong β€” should I just go explain?"

We were prosecutors before we were defense attorneys, and here's the honest answer: almost never without a lawyer. Not because you have something to hide β€” but because you don't know what they already have, honest memory mistakes look like lies in a report, and in Georgia a knowingly false statement to police is a felony all by itself.

You DO have to identify yourself truthfully. You do NOT have to answer investigative questions. Ever.

The one sentence to memorize, and why staying silent isn't enough on its own, is on the blog: https://mmcriminaldefense.com/2026/08/25/should-i-talk-to-police-georgia/

1️⃣ Get safe + call 911 (yes, even for a "minor" one)
2️⃣ Photograph everything before you leave
3️⃣ Be polite β€” but don't apologize or guess
4️⃣ See a doctor within 48 hours, even if you feel fine
5️⃣ Tell YOUR insurer; skip the other side's recorded statement

If someone tries to take out a warrant against you in Georgia, you now have a stronger right to actually be told about it first. πŸ’œ

Under HB 1131 (effective July 1, 2026), you must be notified β€” by personal service β€” of the warrant-application hearing, including the date, time, and place, so you can show up before a warrant is ever issued.

Getting that notice is scary. But it's also an opportunity: it means you can be there, with a lawyer, to tell your side first.

Here's a change worth knowing if you or someone you love is on probation in Georgia. πŸ’œ

As of July 1, 2026, when probation is revoked you now get full credit for the time you already served since the violation (HB 535). Time you've already sat in jail counts β€” you don't serve it twice.

The same law also toughened fentanyl trafficking sentences, so the stakes on drug cases are higher than ever β€” though judges still have room to go below the mandatory minimum in the right case.

Facing a probation violation or a drug charge? Don't go in alone. Call 770-693-4357.

Georgia added a few new crimes as of July 1, 2026. Quick rundown of what they actually mean:

🎁 Gift-card theft/fraud β€” now its own felony (1–10 years, up to $5,000), even for low-value or unactivated cards. The state still has to prove you meant to defraud someone.
β›ͺ Disrupting a religious service β€” now a misdemeanor, but only for intentional disruption within 500 feet and within an hour of the service.
🚧 Blocking a roadway β€” bumped up to a "high and aggravated" misdemeanor (plus possible civil liability), but only if you refuse an officer's order to clear it.

A charge is not a conviction β€” the details decide these cases. Charged with something new and confusing? That's what we're here for. Call 770-693-4357. πŸ’œ
