When I was a child I loved the Berenstain Bears. Recently I learned there is a debate about how the title is spelled, despite the series being named after the authors. Some people insist the series was spelled Berenstein. The pronunciation of the name in the cartoon sounded like Berenstein to me.

People often use this controversy as an example of the Mandela Effect, which describes a false memory that is shared by a group of people. Whether your believe is is Berenstain or Berenstein, this debate emphasizes the importance of putting it in writing! Our memories are unreliable, but a signed document is not.

Last week I posted about including your pets in your estate plan. I loved seeing all of your pets!

The winning pet, chosen by a randomizer, is Oliver!! Today, in Oliver's name, I will make a donation to All 4 Paws Rescue, a non-profit, foster-based, all-breed, no-kill animal rescue based that offers rescue, rehabilitation, and sanctuary to animals in need.

Does your estate plan provide for the care of your four-legged companions? Our pets become an important part of our family. They rely on us for their care and comfort. That’s why it’s important that for us to be sure our pets will be cared for if something happens to us.

When I meet with clients to create an estate plan, we talk about your family and all of the things important to you, including your pets. Does your estate plan appoint someone to love and care for your pets when you die? If you have high-maintenance pets who require costly care, does your estate plan include a pet trust? If your estate plan does not provide for the uninterrupted care and comfort of your special family members, let’s chat.

My dog, Rocky, is a big part of our family. Rocky is a 2 year old labradoodle. Share a picture of your pets! Next week I will randomly pick one pet picture from all of the pictures posted and make a donation to an animal shelter in that pet’s name.

There is no substitute for a well trained professional, but free or low cost software can save your small business time and money while providing exceptional value to your customers. Whether it is a way to allow your clients to schedule appointments online, invoicing software, or marketing tools, we all have aides that make a big difference in the operation of our business.

Some of my most helpful free or low cost tools are Calendly for online scheduling and Canva for marketing and graphics. My list of popular options is in the comments. Contact me for a .pdf version of the list.

Business owners need an exit strategy that outlines what happens to their business after they retire, or if they encounter worst-case scenarios like severe illness, disability, or death. Without a good succession plan, your family or other heirs could be forced to sell the company under duress and be shortchanged on the value of the business you've built. If there's no clear plan in place for who's in charge of the company, what will happen to the business you worked hard to create?
