Scam Alert: The missed jury duty scam.

You will receive a call with a spoofed caller ID from the local Sheriff and they tell you that you have missed jury duty and you must pay a fee to avoid jail. Do not pay the fee. Hang up and check with the Jury Clerk or Sheriff for your county. I have had several folks call after they received this call.

People frequently ask how long to keep documents. Due to some recent problems I have seen, I now recommend keeping loan payoff and credit card payoff documents forever. Some of the big Banks erase their file seven years after payoff. What's the problem you ask?

Problem #1: Lets assume you take out a business loan and secure it by pledging your life insurance. You pay it off. Ten years later your spouse tries to collect. The life insurance pledge was never released and the bank has erased all record of the loan and refuses to do anything. The life insurance company refuses to pay.

Problem #2: You pay off your mortgage. Bank fails to record or issue a satisfaction. Eight years later you try and refinance. The first mortgage is still open on your title and bank refuses to release without proof of payoff.

Problem #3: You payoff a credit card and close the account. Eight years later they sell it to a collection company and they sue you.

These problems can be avoided if you keep your loan payoff and credit card payoff records. In some cases your estate might even need them.

Over a month ago, I wrote an article about the home office deduction that attracted very little notice. I figured folks were either overwhelmed with COVID-19 coverage, or the article didn’t apply to them. More recently, I realized that I was wrong: taxpayers assumed the article didn’t apply to t...
