Before Austin Nelson argued cases in a Cobb County courtroom, he was chasing a different kind of deadline.

Austin got his start as a journalist in a small town, where there's no such thing as sticking to one beat. One week it was a city council vote, the next a local business opening, the next something that landed him in a courtroom, a police report, or a family's worst day. That kind of reporting teaches you to ask the question nobody else thought to ask, and to actually listen when someone tells you their side of a story.

That habit followed him into the law. Today, the Law Office of Austin Nelson defends people across Cobb County, from DUI stops to felony charges. The same instinct that made him dig for the full story as a reporter is what makes him dig for every angle of your case now.

You won't get handed off to someone you've never met. You'll talk to the person who's actually going to fight for you.

Not admitting guilt isn't the same as not getting a conviction. Two different pleas can look nothing alike in the courtroom and land exactly the same on your record. Here's the difference that actually matters.

Your attorney negotiates. Your prosecutor negotiates. You decide. It's the one call in the whole case that's entirely yours to make. Here's how that conversation actually works.

MYTH: If my charge gets dismissed, it disappears from my record automatically.

TRUTH: It doesn't. A dismissal means the case is over, but the arrest and charge can still show up on background checks until the record is ordered restricted and sealed. Two different things: the case ending, and your record actually clearing.

That extra step matters for job applications, housing, and background checks of all kinds. If you've had a case dismissed and never followed up, it may still be worth asking about.

COBB COUNTY, GA. Got a court date that isn't your trial? Here's what that actually is. Weeks before a criminal case in Cobb County goes to trial, the judge holds a calendar call, a short status hearing where both sides report one thing: ready or not ready. Say ready, and a trial date gets locked in on the spot. Say not ready, and the judge decides whether the case gets more time or gets pushed toward trial anyway.

Austin cut his teeth as a trial attorney in Colorado, where he built a reputation as The People's Defender, someone who showed up for clients when the odds were stacked against them. That fight didn't stop when he moved to Georgia.

Trial experience isn't just a number on a resume. It means knowing how to prepare a case for a jury, how to cross-examine a witness, and how to stand in front of twelve strangers and fight for someone's future.

If you're facing criminal charges, you deserve someone who has actually stood in that courtroom before.

You can say no. Police need your consent, a warrant, or probable cause to search without one.

MYTH: If police ask to search my car, I have to let them.

TRUTH: You don't. Police need one of three things to search your car without your permission: your consent, a warrant, or probable cause. Simply asking "mind if I take a look" is a request, not an order, and you're allowed to say no.

Saying no doesn't mean you're guilty of anything. It means you're exercising a right that's been yours the entire time.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings we hear from clients after a traffic stop. Worth knowing before you're ever in that situation.

COBB COUNTY, GA. Before any criminal trial, Georgia law requires the State to turn over its evidence, police reports, footage, lab results, witness statements, but only after a formal discovery demand is filed. Miss that deadline, and options can quietly close before trial ever begins.
