Collins Family Law celebrated a wonderful evening last Saturday at the 2026 Prince William County Bar Association Bar Dinner Dance.

It was a pleasure to spend the evening with colleagues, members of the bench and bar, and friends in the legal community. Events like this are a meaningful reminder of the professionalism, collegiality, and relationships that make our local bar so special.

I had such a wonderful time at the International Gold Cup last Saturday with Samantha Lewis and our colleagues and friends. The event was a great reminder of the vibrant community we’re lucky to be part of here in Virginia. Between the races, the conversations, and the beautiful fall weather, it was a day well spent.

Co-parenting isn’t about liking your ex—it’s about loving your kid enough to put them first.

Tips:
• Stick to the parenting plan
• Keep communication business-like
• Use apps to limit miscommunication
• Don’t take the bait
• Focus on the child, not the past
• Don’t say or write anything you wouldn’t want your child or mother to read

Co-parenting is a long game. Patience and boundaries go a long way.

👉 Struggling with a high-conflict co-parent? We’re here to help.

5 things to know before your consultation:

1. Bring any court documents or relevant paperwork
2. Be honest—even about the messy parts
3. We’re not here to judge, we’re here to help
4. It’s okay not to have all the answers yet
5. Think about your goals, not just your grievances

We know this is hard. We're here to make it easier.

👉 Ready to schedule a consult? Let’s take that first step together.

Thinking of recording your ex? Let’s talk.

We get this question all the time in custody and divorce cases:
👉 “Can I record them yelling at me?”
👉 “What if I catch them saying something awful to the kids?”

Here’s the truth: Recordings can help—or seriously hurt your case.
✅ Sometimes they do provide valuable evidence.
🚫 But if you record someone illegally (especially in a state that requires consent), it might not be usable—or worse, it could get you into legal trouble.

Context also matters.

Our advice?
Don’t press record without pressing pause first.
Talk to your attorney. Get clarity on what’s legal and what’s smart.
Because the last thing you want is to try to help your case—and end up harming it instead.

Hiring the right attorney can feel overwhelming—especially when you're already dealing with a stressful family situation.

So how do you choose?

Here are 3 things we encourage people to consider:

✅ Comfort & Communication – Do you feel heard? Understood? Do they explain things clearly and respond to your questions without making you feel small?

✅ Experience That Matches Your Needs – Family law is a world of its own. You want someone who handles your type of case all the time—not just occasionally.

✅ Approach & Values – Some attorneys push for a fight. Others prioritize resolution. Make sure their style aligns with yours.

You’re not just hiring legal knowledge—you’re hiring a guide through a tough chapter of your life.

At our firm, we believe in honesty, strategy, and treating our clients like real people, not case files.

If that sounds like what you’re looking for, we’d be happy to talk.

Facing a divorce, custody dispute, or support issue in Virginia and wondering if you really need a lawyer? Here are the moments when having counsel makes a real difference:

• Kids are involved. Courts look to the child’s best interests—stability, involvement, co-parenting. A lawyer helps you prepare and protect your parental rights.
• Property or debt to divide. Virginia uses equitable distribution (not always 50/50). Get clear on marital vs. separate property and avoid costly mistakes.
• Child or spousal support at stake. Guideline calculations and exceptions matter. Solid advocacy now also makes future modifications/enforcement smoother.
• Conflict, abuse, or intimidation. Safety and power imbalances require experienced advocacy.
• You’re overwhelmed. Family law is deadline-driven; one missed filing or misstep can hurt your case.

Bottom line: Not every case needs an attorney—but if children, assets, support, or conflict are in the mix, legal representation can save time, money, and peace of mind.

Wondering how child support is calculated in Virginia? Here’s the breakdown.

Virginia uses a formula based on:

📊 Both parents’ incomes
🧒 How many children you have
🏠 Your custody arrangement (split time vs. one primary custodian)
💵 Health insurance + work-related childcare costs

These numbers go into Virginia’s Child Support Guidelines—a chart that calculates the amount.

Whether you’re paying or receiving, it’s important to know how the system works.

Got questions? We help parents make sense of the numbers and the bigger picture.

Common Misconceptions About Fault-Based Divorce in Virginia

Many people think fault-based divorces are the only way to end a marriage—or that proving fault guarantees a better outcome. Here’s what you need to know:

❌ Misconception: You have to prove fault (like adultery or cruelty) to get divorced in Virginia.
✅ Fact: Virginia offers no-fault divorce options, so you don’t have to assign blame to end your marriage.

❌ Misconception: Proving fault always affects property division or custody decisions.
✅ Fact: Fault usually doesn’t impact property division or custody—courts focus on equity and the child’s best interests.

❌ Misconception: Fault grounds mean you’ll get “more” in the settlement.
✅ Fact: Fault doesn’t guarantee financial advantage. Virginia courts prioritize equitable distribution, not punishment.

Understanding your options helps you make informed choices for your family’s future.

If you have questions about divorce grounds in Virginia, we’re here to guide you through the process.

Last weekend, our firm stepped away from the day-to-day and spent two nights at The Omni Homestead.

We did some real work—talking about where we’ve been, where we’re going, and how we want our practice to grow. But we also slowed down, laughed a lot, and asked ourselves some big questions:
✨ What kind of firm do we really want to build?
✨ How do we keep serving families well while also taking care of ourselves?
✨ What parts of this work bring us the most joy—and how do we protect that?

Family law can be heavy. Taking time to reset reminded us that caring for ourselves helps us show up better for the families who count on us.

We came back clearer, more connected, and ready to implement changes to improve some of our processes.
