After an automobile accident, it is important to gather as much information as possible. If you are able, try to collect the following:

Driver Information
Write down the driver’s name, address, phone number, insurance company, policy number, driver’s license number, license plate number, and vehicle identification number (VIN).

Vehicle Owner Information
If the driver is not the owner of the vehicle or the person listed on the insurance policy, get the owner’s or insured person’s name and address. Also note their relationship to the driver.

Witness and Police Information
If there are witnesses, ask for their names and contact information. You should also record the name, badge number, and contact information of any police officers who respond to the accident.
