'Tis better to give than to receive.

With Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaching, it is always nice to think about giving as a means to make a difference in the world around us. Whether it is a gift to a child for educational purposes, a gift to a family member or friend in need, or a gift to a charity, you can make a difference in the world around you.

Consider making a gift to a child in an Edvest account for future educational expenses. Not only will your gift have tax benefits for you now, but it will grow tax free over time to double, triple, or even quadruple its impact over time for the child's benefit. After all, pursuing advanced education is getting more and more expensive making it wise to start saving now.

Consider making a gift of the annual exclusion amount to a family member or friend in need. For 2024, the annual gift tax exclusion amount is $18,000, and, for a married couple, the combined amount is $36,000. If you have more than you need, you can truly make a difference in the life of a loved one.

Finally, consider making a charitable gift. Perhaps you have a cause in which you truly believe and you feel called to help a charity. You can gift cash, equities, retirement plan contributions, life insurance proceeds, or real estate to advance a charitable mission while also achieving tax benefits. October 16th-22nd, 2023 is National Estate Planning Awareness Week.

Interestingly, the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils estimated in 2021 that over half of Americans do not have an updated Estate Plan.

An Estate Plan is not just for the wealthy. Everyone over age 18 needs a plan. It includes more than just a Will, and it is an investment that pays off both intrinsically and financially.

Make a Roadmap for Success. Make a Difference.

2023 and 2024 are looking to be big years for Estate Planning. Highlights include the following:

The Annual Gift Exclusion Rises to $17,000.

This means an individual will be able to give $17,000 per donee and a couple will be able to give $34,000 per donee annually.

Additionally

The Estate Tax Exclusion amount rises to $12.92 M for an individual and $25.84 M for a couple.

Without further Congressional action, this historically high Estate Tax Exclusion amount will sunset in 2025 which means 2023 and 2024 will be great years for Estate Planning.

To Learn More:

Starting in 2023, individuals can transfer up to $12.92 million to heirs, during life or at death, without triggering a federal estate tax bill.

So happy to be a small part of something bigger! As a Wisconsin Arts Board member, I had the wonderful opportunity to witness Governor Scott Walker sign a bill to increase state funding for the arts this morning! Every little bit counts :-)
