This is our firm's chief accounting officer. His name is Patrick and he's a Boston Terrier. He is terrible at this job but he's handsome so we keep him around.
It's a good reminder that Pets are important and you should make a plan for them in your Estate. Do you think your children would take them in? Do you want to name a trusted friend? Do you want to make a bequest (money gift) to the person taking your pet?

Why is it important to have an estate plan in place if you have minor children? If something happens to you while they are still young, you want to have a solid plan in place for someone trustworthy to manage their assets for them until they are old enough to handle their own affairs. The State of New Jersey thinks this age is 21 so that is the default if you don't have other plans in place.

What exactly is a Revocable Living Trust and why are they so great?
A Revocable Living Trust is a flexible tool that you can use to pass your assets to your loved ones at your death without them having to deal with the probate process. You (but not your kids) can change your Trust during your lifetime, add property, remove property, etc. There is no tax advantage since it's revocable but it is certainly faster and more private. An Executor is an administrative role. This is a person who will submit your Will to the Courts for Probate, gather all of your assets, pay your debts, and distribute the assets at the end to your beneficiaries named in your Will.

When choosing an executor, choose someone trustworthy, organized, patient, and good with paperwork! By law, they are entitled to be paid from your Estate for serving in this role but not all executors elect to accept payment.

Can you name someone to be your executor who is not inheriting anything from you? You bet.

I'm reading a novel right now that ironically crosses over into estate planning. A family has a huge falling out with their adult son who stormed out eight years ago and never spoke to his parents again. The parents are in a terrible car accident and this son is still listed as their healthcare proxy so he has to come back to make all these hard decisions for his parents that he hasn't seen or spoken to in years. It's heartbreaking.

The moral of the story? Update your incapacity planning documents or when you have a major life event. It could really matter.
