The Colonel Thomas Robeson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution invites you to a special celebration marking the 250th anniversary of North Carolina’s first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Join us at 10AM on August 1, 2026, at the historic Proctor Law Office, 517 N Elm St, Lumberton.

On August 1, 1776, North Carolinians first heard the bold words of the Declaration at the colonial courthouse in Halifax. Just weeks earlier, on July 4, the Continental Congress had officially adopted the document, announcing that the thirteen American colonies were severing ties with Great Britain. The Declaration laid out political grievances but just as important it declared that everyone had the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that governments exist to protect those rights.
The fifty-six men who signed were risking everything including possible ex*****on, the loss of their homes and fortunes, and possible retribution against their families due to their belief in the importance of freedom.

This event is open to all with a reception following in the Proctor Law Building. Come be a part of history as we celebrate the courage that shaped a nation.

250 years ago today, on July 8, 1776, Colonel John Nixon read the Declaration of Independence to a gathered crowd at noon in the yard of the Pennsylvania State House (now known as Independence Hall) in Philadelphia. Though July 4 marks the date Congress adopted the document, the July 8 reading officially broke the news to the citizens of the thirteen colonies, rallying laborers, merchants, and soldiers alike.

LUMBERTON, N.C. (June 26, 2026) — More than a decade after her disappearance in 2015, a North Carolina Superior Court judge has legally declared Sara Nicole Graham dead, allowing prosecutors to pursue charges related to the case, which has now happened.
Through her attorney, Carlton Mansfield of the Mansfield Law Firm in Lumberton, Graham’s mother, Catherine Armenta, issued the following statement:
“The last eleven years have been tremendously difficult. Not a day goes by that my other children and I don’t think about Sara. We miss her terribly. After more than a decade since Sara’s disappearance, the decision to seek a court order to have her declared deceased was incredibly painful but something we felt we needed to do. Our family would like to thank the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their tireless efforts to find Sara and for the continued support they have shown us. We would also like to thank the Robeson County District Attorney’s Office for their ongoing efforts to seek justice for Sara. We echo the plea that we have made since 2015 that anyone with information about Sara’s disappearance should come forward and share that information with law enforcement.”
The family asks for privacy as they continue to mourn and process these latest developments.

Robeson County courts, both District and Superior, are canceled for Tuesday, February 3. As of now, courts should be open on Wednesday, February 4, but I’ll let you know if that changes.

WEATHER-RELATED COURT CHANGES:

Due to impending inclement weather and anticipated flooding, the Robeson County court schedule has been modified as follows:

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7 & THURSDAY, AUGUST 8: All district court and small claims sessions are canceled. The Office of the Clerk of Superior Court will mail notices with the rescheduled court dates to the affected parties.

All applications for 50B Domestic Violence Ex Parte Orders shall be heard at the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office at 2:00 p.m. by the magistrate assigned to duty.
