The knowledge that interactions are being recorded can deter both officers and the public from engaging in inappropriate or illegal behavior. The only law enforcement officers I've ever known to have "malfunctioning " body cameras were the ones everyone knew were bad cops. This is a terrible, unjustified, unnecessary rollback to a complete lack of transparency.

An internal email obtained by ProPublica said the agency made the change to be “consistent” with a Trump executive order. But at least two other federal law enforcement agencies are still requiring body cameras.
