The “reserve” is the amount of money the insurance company has set aside (or “reserved”) to settle a claim. A reserve is established at the outset of a claim, but it can be (and often is) adjusted and re-set as new information about the claim becomes available (through your medical records, witness interviews, the police report, etc.).

The “statute of limitations” is the time limit for filing a lawsuit for a particular injury or wrong. This is important to know because, because the statute of limitations is a hard deadline. With few exceptions, if you miss the deadline to file suit, that opportunity is lost forever. Insurance companies know this, and it gives them even more incentive to delay settling a claim.
