Chappell, Lanehart & Stangl, P.C.

Chappell, Lanehart & Stangl, P.C. Chappell, Lanehart & Stangl is one of the oldest law firms in Lubbock and represents citizens of all backgrounds accused of a criminal charge.

Chuck Lanehart & Fred Stangl are experienced lawyers in the courtroom. Both are board certified in criminal law. When you are charged with a crime or are subject to a criminal investigation, you have a serious problem. Even if you believe you have done nothing wrong, you may have to fight to prove your innocence. Your reputation is on the line, and your liberty is held in precarious balance. Chuck

Lanehart has long been known in Texas as a winning trial lawyer. He is board certified in the field of Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and concentrates his practice primarily in criminal trial and appellate work in state and federal courts throughout Texas. Fred Stangl has practiced criminal defense almost exclusively since obtaining his law degree from Texas Tech in 1999. He is certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and defends accused citizens across the South Plains.

This is our crew, the best criminal defense law firm in this part of the country, established in 1948 by the legendary Byron "Lawyer" Chappell. Representing more than 123 years of legal experience are, left to right, Bernadette Vaughn, me, Fred Stangl, Travis Wiebold and Tiffany Neal. Chappell, Lanehart & Stangl, P.C., Attorneys at Law, Lubbock, Texas, USA. Tomorrow, I will become “of counsel” to my firm, meaning no more heavy lifting. I’ll still be at the office most days, so feel free to drop by or call. I’ll concentrate mostly on writing and pro bono work.

As always, members of our firm and many friends participated in the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, conducted by the Lubbock Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. For the first time in 15 years of this grand tradition, the ceremony was forced indoors, and we had to forego the usual patriotic music at the courthouse gazebo.

It was quite an honor to address the Lubbock Area Bar Association today. My friend Dwight McDonald and I spoke on a very uncomfortable topic, “Overcoming Early Lubbock’s Shameful Treatment of Black Residents.” I spoke first on early history: Lubbock’s terrible racist newspaper editor, the Klan, Jim Crow laws, etc. Then Dwight talked about the “overcoming” part, much more inspiring stuff: Civil Rights legislation, local lawsuits to desegregate schools and establish diversity in Lubbock leadership, important Black Lubbock citizens, etc.
