His practice focuses on estate planning, including preparation of trusts, wills, powers of attorney, probate law, business planning, real estate law, contract law, and minor criminal law. He has practiced law in several venues, such as an Assistant State's Attorney where he prosecuted the various areas of criminal law ranging from common misdemeanors up to complex felony level crimes. He has also served as a direct commissioned Officer for the United States Army, Judge Advocate General (JAG). As an Officer in the JAG, he prepared legal documents for soldiers to prepare for deployment in the various areas of the world. Jeremy is also an allied attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom, which is a Christian legal organization that provides the resources that will keep the door open for the spread of the Gospel through the legal defense of religious freedom, the sanctity of life, marriage, and the family. He has assisted several Christians in defending their religious rights as stated under the First Amendment. Jeremy has also been an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities for the last several years. He has taught courses such as: Business Law I and II, Legal Analysis and Writing, Legal and Ethical Issues for Managers, Legal and Regulatory Issues in Business, Medical Law and Ethics, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Church and Non-Profit Law, Judicial Process in America, Legal and Ethical Issues in the Human Services, Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, Constitutional Law and Christianity, and American Government. Jeremy is married, has two young children and is honored to be a Christian husband and father. He enjoys spending as much time with his famiy as possible and supports various Christian ministries such as: Philanthrocorp, Wallbuilders, Family Life Today, Family Talk, Insight for Living, Focus on the Family, the Alliance Defending Freedom, and many other Christian ministries. How much does it cost to have a Will or Trust made in Illinois?

It's one of the most common questions I hear, and it's a fair one. Nobody wants to walk into a lawyer's office without having some idea of what they're going to spend. 😄

Here are some general attorney-drafted price ranges in Illinois for 2026:

• Simple Will: $300 to $1,000.
• Revocable Living Trust: $1,500 to $3,500.
• Power of Attorney: $150 to $500 per document.
• Comprehensive Estate Plan: $3,000 to $10,000+ for complex situations.

These are general estimates, not a price list for my office. What you actually need depends on your family, assets, and goals.

Your kids shouldn't have to spend months in probate court just to receive what you've left them.

That's one reason I talk to families about Revocable Living Trusts. When properly set up and funded, a trust can allow assets to pass to your loved ones without going through the traditional probate process.

It's not about how much money you have. It's about making things easier for the people you care about when they already have enough on their minds.

You’ve Been Named Executor. What Comes First?

The first step is locating the original physical Will and filing it with the local Circuit Clerk within 30 days of learning of the death.

The Executor then files a Petition for Letters of Office. Until the probate judge issues those Letters, the Executor cannot legally transfer property or manage estate accounts.

Being named Executor comes with a job. It also comes with a process.

One of the Biggest Power of Attorney Misunderstandings

Being someone's Power of Attorney does not give you authority to continue handling their finances after they pass away.

At death, the Power of Attorney expires. That means you can't continue using it to withdraw money, move assets, or sign documents on their behalf.

Think of it this way: POA is a lifetime job. Executor is an after-death job.

When Do Beneficiaries Actually Get Their Inheritance?

Usually, there's work to do first.

The executor needs to deal with the estate's assets, valid claims, expenses, taxes when applicable, and other administration before making final distributions.

I know "be patient" isn't the answer anyone waiting on an inheritance wants to hear, but probate has an order to it for a reason.

What Does an Executor Actually Have to Do?

The process can feel overwhelming, so here's the simple version:

Open the estate and receive Letters of Office.
Complete the required notices.
Inventory and secure the estate's assets.
Work through the six-month creditor claims window.
Resolve valid debts and taxes.
Complete the final accounting.
Distribute the remaining estate and close the case.

One step at a time makes probate a lot easier to understand.

Why Can't We Just Finish Probate?

One reason probate doesn't happen overnight is Illinois's creditor claim process.

Published notice must provide a claims deadline of at least six months from the first publication, with additional rules applying to known or reasonably ascertainable creditors.

Sometimes probate feels like a waiting game because, legally, part of it is.
