California law requires that nonexempt employees not work more than five hours without an uninterrupted, duty-free meal period of at least 30 minutes. Certain exceptions may apply, including where the employee works no more than six hours and voluntarily gives up the right to take a break. Employees who work more than 10 hours in a day are entitled to take a second meal break. NEW CORONA VIRUS RESPONSE ACT - IT'S THE LAW (U.S) (Effective no later than April 3, 2020)*

EMERGENCY PAID SICK PAY (FULL PAY) affects employers with less than 500 employees.
NOT WORKING...due to: 1) a federal, state or local quarantine order; 2) advise of a health provider to self quarantine; or 3) experiencing systems and seeking medical diagnosis? Your employer must pay you 2 weeks (up to 80 hours for full-time workers) of full pay (up to $511 per day). [Employees are eligible day 1 of employment]

EMERGENCY FMLA (PARTIAL PAID LEAVE) affects employers with less than 500 employees. If you need additional time off to: a) care for self or qualified family member who is subject to the order or has been advised to quarantine by a health care provider, b) need to care for a son or daughter if the school or care facility closes, or c) experiencing any other substantially similar condition; and you unable to work or telework -- your employer must pay 2/3 of your regular pay (up to $200 per day) - 10 day waiting period applies.

Employers may not require employees to use PTO before paying out these benefits.
