On July 30, 1945, the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was struck by two Japanese torpedoes in the Philippine Sea shortly after delivering components for the atomic bomb. The vessel sank in just twelve minutes, casting approximately 900 men into the open ocean with almost no lifeboats. Because the mission was top secret, the ship was not reported missing, and the sailors were left to drift for four days without food or fresh water.
