United Airlines instituted changes to its unaccompanied minors program for children flying alone, effective December 14. Is this for the safety of children or to generate more revenue for airlines? Will other airlines follow? http://lat.ms/1Tm6NhJ

Back-Up Plans
Today’s last minute city-wide school closures emphasize the need for having a workable and updated back-up plan in the event school is closed or your child is sick. Make sure you have the following: 1) A plan for what your child will do on a day off from school (whether due to illness or school closure) when it is your custodial day and you are unable to care for your child; 2) Names of two emergency contacts whom your child’s school is permitted to release your child in the event you cannot pick up your child; and 3) An updated list of medical providers, caregivers, close friends and family members whom you may need to call so that you are not scrambling looking for information. Events like this morning underscore the desirability of good co-parenting and working together to solve the unanticipated.

As family law custody attorneys, we are frequently asked for tips to avoid conflict during the holiday season. We suggest that parents 1) review custody orders in advance to avoid issues and conflict; 2) try not to get caught up with having the actual holiday. Remember that the holidays are not necessarily about the actual day, but instead about spending meaningful time with your children; 3) Avoid placing your children in the middle of custody disputes with your ex-spouse, especially holiday disputes; and 4) Refrain from asking your children where they want to be and don’t convey messages to the other parent through your children. If there is ever a time of year to keep the peace for the sake of your children, the holidays are it!
