Take a listen!
May is Asthma Awareness Month, and today is World Asthma Day. Nearly 26 million people in the US have asthma, including 4.8 million children under the age of 18. There is no cure for asthma, but awareness and appropriate treatment can prevent asthma attacks and promote a better quality of life.
In February 2023, California State Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh (R-Yucaipa) introduced SB 283 known as "Adilene's Law" named in honor of 13-year-old Adilene Carrasco who suffered an asthma attack at school and died as a result of the district’s failure to follow its own safety protocols. If passed, SB 283 would require school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools in California to adopt a comprehensive asthma management plan on or before the start of the 2024–25 school year.
PSBR is honored to have represented Adilene's mother, Edith Sepulveda, in her case against the Yucaipa-Calimesa Unified School District and to work with Senator Ochoa Bogh to create lasting change so that no family suffers the same tragedy of losing a child to an asthma attack at school.
