The hardware inside a huge share of legal v**e carts comes from one company: Smoore, brand name CCELL.

A federal antitrust case alleges Smoore and its four US distributors agreed on minimum prices and agreed not to take each other's customers.

Vertical agreements, manufacturer to distributor, are usually legal. Horizontal ones, between competitors, are per se illegal.

Same contracts. Opposite outcomes.

The court dismissed this claim once already.

An Oklahoma boarding school for teenage girls has a handbook that tells parents not to believe their daughters.

New Lifehouse Academy markets to families of depressed and self-destructive teens. It is not licensed for mental health treatment and has no licensed counselors.

24 former students told The Frontier about food restriction, forced exercise, and restraint used as punishment. Three federal lawsuits are pending.

In 2002, 120+ people filed claims against the Archdiocese of Boston over the same priest. One man didn't. He wasn't ready.

This year he was, and learned Massachusetts bars survivors over 53 from suing. He was six when it started, a month after his firefighter father died.

The state also caps charitable liability in these cases, reported at $20,000.

H.4539 would change both. It dies January 5.

On September 8, a 27-year-old researcher with under 100 followers posted from a park bench that he'd resigned from Anthropic, and that neither Anthropic nor OpenAI is acting responsibly.

Within hours, the head of alignment research at Anthropic agreed publicly, putting human extinction odds in the next decade above 10%.

He quit two months before his equity vested.

Every mass tort asks what they knew and when. This time it's already public.

The facility closed. That almost never happens.

Refuge Girls Academy in Lebanon, Indiana, an addiction program for teen girls, shut its doors September 10 amid a federal suit that grew from 9 plaintiffs in April to 35 by June.

The core claim isn't negligence. It's federal trafficking law: unpaid labor for outside businesses, solitary in a windowless "Safe Room," weeks of enforced silence.

Every AI chatbot case so far has involved someone who died. This one didn't.

Michael Lines, 34, survived. His suit against OpenAI and Sam Altman, filed July 1 in San Francisco, alleges the chatbot reinforced his delusions during a manic episode instead of directing him to help, after he had repeatedly disclosed his bipolar diagnosis.

Why it changes the litigation: he can testify about what he experienced.

Follow-up to the Show-Me story: it wasn't a one-off.

Wings of Faith Academy, a shuttered Missouri Christian boarding school, is being sued in federal court. The claim in this one isn't just abuse. It's trafficking.

A former student alleges the owners isolated her from family, moved her state to state, transported her into Mexico, and obtained her labor through coercion and fear, beginning when she was 14.

LA County agreed to pay $4 billion to people abused as children in its juvenile halls, foster homes, and shelters. Largest of its kind in US history.

Then the county's own DA moved to freeze payments, saying investigators believe over 80% of the 11,000+ claims are fabricated. That's an allegation, not a court finding.

A judge denied the freeze in June. $700M+ began going out in July.

Whatever share is false, children were abused there.

Follow-up on the Show-Me Christian Youth Home lawsuits.

For three years, the facility's director testified for a Missouri bill letting unlicensed faith-based facilities apply to take state-custody foster kids.
It would have created an oversight board where six of 13 seats went to the industry being overseen.
Former residents testified in support. The bill stalled anyway, and the sponsor won't refile.

The Diocese of Buffalo filed Chapter 11 in February 2020. Six years later, it's the longest process of its kind in the country.

This week, ballots went to about 900 survivors on a $326M settlement: $150M from the diocese, $176M from insurers. They have 60 days.

The money isn't split evenly. An allocator scores each claim by severity, so survivors vote on the framework without knowing their number.
