SHARE A SMILE BECKY BARBIE…
NOT ADA♿️ APPROVED
Share a Smile Becky, who used a wheelchair, was introduced in 1997. In many ways it was a welcome move to be more inclusive in the types of women represented, but apparently Mattel hadn't reviewed the Americans with Disabilities Act; customers soon discovered Becky's chair didn't fit through the door of the Dreamhouse.
"We are looking at the accessibility of all Barbie accessories," Mattel's then-spokesperson Lisa McKendall assured The Washington Post at the time.
Alas, looking into the matter was all they did. Mattel realized redesigning all the Barbie play sets to accommodate Becky would have been involved and costly.
Instead, they opted to discontinue Becky a decade after her launch.
FWIW: As part of the 2019
Fashionistas line, Mattel did release new dolls that use wheelchairs (as well as ones with prosthetic limbs) and included ramps to make the Dreamhouse accessible.
