School Predator Alert! Matthew Joseph Shelton a former 4th and 5th grade teacher at Robert Semple Elementary School in Benicia CA was recently arraigned on Lewd Or Lasivious Acts with a minor.

The predator was charged with similar crimes in 2007 in Napa and background checks should have revealed his history before he was given the teaching job in 2015. Clear case of negligence here. Former students of these Southern California Schools Pomona High School and Rosemead High School say that both institutions have had “prolific problems with childhood sexual abuse”. Law suits have been filed and and abuse survivors have mentioned being groomed for abuse, being groped, being sexually assaulted and harassed by adult authority figures at these schools for years.
School districts responsible for the safety of children at these schools have historically failed bringing sexual predators to justice. Recent changes to the statute of limitations for victims of sexual abuse in California can help you get justice and compensation for what happened. For decades the California Department of Collections was negligent in preventing sexual abuse at women’s prisons like Chowchilla CIW VSP and so many other facilities. Under California Law it is illegal for corrections officers to engage in sexual activity relationships or misconduct with inmates. NO CONSENT can be give to a corrections officer by an inmate in any circumstances. Recently California passed legislation that removes the time limitations for filing suit in cases of sexual abuse in detention facilities. That means that survivors of abuse in California prisons and jails can seek justice and closure for their experiences. Survivors of sexual abuse who experience traumatic events often suppress their memories, block things out and try so hard to forget what has happened to them. Without being provided an outlet of comfort and support, survivors may be left with the burden of internalizing these emotional experiences. We believe survivor stories are powerful. We believe survivors deserve an empathetic community to be heard, believed, and supported. When this community grows so does empowerment confidence and the courage in many out there you have yet to speak up. Your day will come too.

Child grooming is a deliberate process by which a trusted adult authority figure in a child’s life gradually initiates and maintains sexual relationships with victims in secrecy.

Grooming allows offenders to slowly overcome natural boundaries long before sexual abuse occurs. On the surface, grooming a child can look like a close relationship between the offending adult, the targeted child and (potentially) the child’s caregivers. The grooming process is often misleading because the offender may be well-known or highly regarded in the community. As a result, it’s easy to trust them.

An adult grooming a child also tends to take a vantage of the information they know about the child. For example if the child’s father is out of the picture or there was a recent death in the family the groomer will use that information to gain confidence and trust from the child. It is manipulation through and through.
