“How much does a divorce cost?”

A customer asked me this recently and, as you can guess, the answer is IT DEPENDS.

What most couples forget in the heat of anger, grief, and disappointment is that it is in *everyone’s* best interest to preserve as much of the divorce assets as possible. Too many people dig in their heels on one issue or another and spend thousands $$$$ to have attorneys fight it out. This is akin to shooting yourself in the foot.

If you can be agreeable enough to fill out the divorce papers yourself, this is usually the cheapest way to go. All you’re out is a little bit of pride, perhaps, and the filing fees.

Working with a mediator is the next best option and at the end of the day can potentially get you the fastest, simplest divorce for less than a couple grand $$.

The second you decide to hire an attorney, your expenses - and the level of tension - increase tenfold. Most attorneys won’t accept you as a client without a retainer somewhere in the ballpark of $1000-$5000.
