We have some extra cold temperatures coming and a short time outside can be detrimental to a pet!
- *PLEASE* bring pets inside! If you are unable to, fresh, thawed water should be available at all times. Heated water bowls will prevent the water from freezing. Provide lots of *straw* (not hay or pine straw or wood chips) with appropriate shelter to protect them from the elements. Do NOT use blankets as they will freeze.
-Some breeds are more tolerant of cold temps than others, but these temperatures coming may be extreme. Please still keep an eye on those thick coated, cold loving pups to make sure this weather doesn’t get the best of them.
- Bang loudly on the hood of your car and honk your horn before starting your car. Cold weather means stray kitties and wildlife may find warmth under/in your car.
- Try to keep areas as dry as possible. With the amount of rain we’ve received and still anticipate, the mud is certainly no joke!
- Clean up any antifreeze or other chemical spills as these are very toxic to animals. Be especially vigilant of this if you’re keeping a pet in a garage/barn where these things are typically stored.
- If you see an animal without proper shelter, food, or water or other concerns, please contact your local Animal Control. If you can safely offer support (such as a dog house, straw, food), you might help a pet and his family in a time of need!
- Keep your pet secure to avoid a missing pet during this weather. Collars, tags, microchips! If you don’t have them, now is the time to get them! If you do have a pet that goes missing or find one, please report it to your local animal control and post on local lost/found pet pages immediately.
