On April 9, 2026, FBMJ attorneys Brian Whitelaw and Sarah Cherry presented a number of medical-legal issues to emergency medicine residents, medical students, and attending physicians at Ascension St. John Hospital Detroit in Detroit, Michigan.

Emergency medicine physicians are among the most frequently named providers in medical malpractice lawsuits. Studies show that over 75% of emergency medicine physicians will be named in a medical malpractice claim at some point in their careers.

During their presentation, Brian and Sarah provided residents with information about medical malpractice lawsuits across the country. They also discussed the anatomy of a medical malpractice lawsuit, as well as current trends driving nuclear verdicts, including economic and social inflation, reptile theory, and other social and legal factors.

They further addressed how emergency medicine physicians can protect themselves through effective medical charting and how to handle difficult patients and challenging scenarios. Throughout the presentation, they used examples from actual cases and trials to demonstrate that even excellent medical care and thorough documentation can still result in being named as a defendant in a malpractice case.

Brian and Sarah defend a significant number of emergency medicine lawsuits each year and have successfully obtained numerous dismissals and defense verdicts on behalf of their clients.

Foley, Baron, Metzger & Juip, PLLC is pleased to announce that Joseph P. McGill has been appointed to serve on the Michigan Judicial Council.

The Michigan Judicial Council is an advisory body established by the Michigan Supreme Court to make recommendations on matters relating to the administration of justice and the strategic direction of Michigan’s judicial system. The Council brings together judges, attorneys, court administrators, and public members to provide thoughtful guidance on issues affecting courts and court users across the state.

Mr. McGill’s appointment reflects his longstanding commitment to the legal profession and to public service. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles focused on professionalism, ethics, and the effective administration of justice, and he has been widely respected for his measured judgment and institutional perspective.

In accepting the appointment, Mr. McGill expressed appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to the Council’s collaborative work in support of a fair, accessible, and trusted judicial system.

The firm congratulates Mr. McGill on this appointment and commends his continued service to the profession and to the public.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

In celebration of the strong ties between Detroit and Cork, we were honored to welcome a visiting delegation of government officials from Cork City and County Cork to Foley, Baron, Metzger & Juip for a breakfast gathering during St. Patrick’s Day week.

Members of the judiciary, the legal community, and the Irish-American community joined us to greet our guests and celebrate the longstanding sister-city relationship between Detroit and Cork.

Special thanks to Hon. Joseph Patrick McGill, whose efforts helped organize and host this gathering.
