I volunteer with the Chicago Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation Committee. Over the past year, we have been conducting investigations into the candidates for judicial office and holding hearings. Please take a look at our voting guides and feel free to share.

With early voting set to begin October 1st, it's time to get prepared! The CBA's judicial evaluations, available at www.chicagobar.org/votejudges, help voters learn about judicial candidates for retention and election before heading out to vote.

Judicial elections rarely generate the same attention as contests for mayor, governor, or president, but the lawyers elected to the bench shape our justice system in profound and lasting ways. That is why being informed, especially when voting for judges, matters.

The CBA's Judicial Evaluation Committee conducts nonpartisan evaluations through a comprehensive, peer-to-peer review process as a long-standing public service. The result of those evaluations is the CBA's Judge Smart Pocket Guide, which is available in English, Polish, and Spanish, and can be downloaded or printed here: www.chicagobar.org/votejudges.

I am a long-time volunteer with the Chicago Bar Association's judicial evaluation committee. We just wrapped up our months-long process of rating the judges who are up for election or retention in the upcoming general election. Last Friday, the Chicago Bar Association had a banquet to honor members of its Judiicial Evaluation Committee, and I was one of the recipients of a Distinguished Service Award. (I also got to hear Jeff Marks’ incredible Pete Townsend story). Special thanks to Phyllis Lubinski, Jeff Finke and Trisha Rich for arranging this special evening.

Lots of good results this month: 4 DUI suspensions rescinded, one DUI client found Not Guilty, two other cases dropped by prosecutors, and a client with a revoked license was granted a driving permit. Three other clients charged with felony criminal cases were offered deferred prosecution or special probation that will result in dismissal of the case if successfully completed.

SCAM ALERT:

The Niles Police Department is warning residents about a fraudulent “Notice of Hearing – Traffic Violation” letter currently circulating.

These documents may appear official and reference Cook County courts, but they are NOT legitimate. They often include threats of fines, court action, or penalties to pressure you into making a payment or scanning a QR code.

Red Flags to Watch For:
• Unexpected traffic or toll violations you are unaware of
• Requests for immediate payment to avoid penalties
• QR codes or suspicious links

What You Should Do:
• Do NOT scan the QR code or send payment
• Do NOT provide personal or financial information
• Verify any violations directly through official court or municipal websites
• Report the incident to the Niles Police Department
