⚖️ Legal term of the week: hearsay evidence

If you've watched a legal TV show like "Suits" or "Law and Order" you've probably heard the term, but what does it mean?

Hearsay evidence is evidence that isn't based on the personal knowledge of a witness.

Like in the mock trial episode of "Suits" when Kyle used a statement from a third party: "Jenny told me that Sydney hated her promotion."

The Supreme Court of Missouri created Juror Appreciation Week 25 years ago to honor the service of those who endure to uphold justice in Missouri. The order states, “Each year thousands of Missourians perform one of the most significant civic duties granted to citizens – they serve as fair and impartial jurors in communities throughout the state. To honor those citizens who have performed their civic duty, all Missouri courts are directed to observe Juror Appreciation Week ....”

1,017,401 Missourians have served as jurors over the past 25 years to uphold justice. 69,708 of those were in 2024. Keep an eye on The Missouri Bar page this week and visit ShowMeRights.org/Jury-Duty to learn more about jury service.

America has a high recidivism rate that is baked into the foundation of the criminal justice system. Recently released inmates often struggle with reintegration back into society, due to job insecurity, a lack of support system, limited access to educational resources, mental health issues, and societal judgment. These individuals need community support and resources so they may successfully integration back into society.

There are many reasons why an innocent person might confess to a crime they didn’t commit. In an effort to solve crime, law enforcement may employ various tactics. These tactics may include fabricating evidence, subjecting individuals to prolonged interrogations, false promises, and pressure to lie. An individual's age, mental health, developmental intelligence, and experience with the legal system may all play a role in false confessions.

It’s crucial to remember that you have rights! If you're ever in a situation where you are being questioned by the police, it is your right to ask for an attorney and delay answering any questions until your legal representative is present.

We appreciate the sacrifices that our veterans have made for the country. It is also important to remember the struggles and tribulations that veterans often experience after service. Veterans may struggle with finding support and community resources which can lead to a higher rates of imprisonment and homelessness.
