Sometimes the “step back” is actually preparation for your biggest step forward.

Don’t be afraid to pivot. Don’t be afraid to pause. And whatever you do, don’t mistake a temporary step back for failure. 💯

After divorcing my ex-husband and choosing to leave behind the first home I ever owned/renovated, I needed a safe and secured, monitored community with one way in and one way out.

This was the only home I ever rented in the United States, and from 2011 through October 2013, it became my peaceful, safe haven--before the military relocated me to Pennsylvania.

OF COURSE, I wanted to renovate it BUT the landlord was NOT having it and when they rented it in 2020, it still looked exactly the same!

And what do you think I did while living there? 👀

I house-hacked AGAIN and rented out rooms because no matter the storm entrepreneurship has always been part of who I am! 😂

A Family in need Tenant reached out weeks in advance about possibly paying her 3rd rent payment later in the month. She had only moved in two months ago and didn’t expect school supplies to cost what felt like a second mortgage! 😂 Because she communicated beforehand, we were happy to accommodate her.

She also asked about opting into our lawn-care program, but unfortunately, my team never heard back from her.

Fast-forward a couple of weeks…my insurance agent informed me that the lowest rate home insurance (he periodically applies for on my behalf) was denied because of the foliage around the home.

Wait…what?! 😂

On July 1, the grass seed we planted was finally growing in! So, I immediately dispatched my lawncare team to handle it—clearing the foliage, removing sticks/debris from the roof, and repairing siding that came loose.

After speaking with the Tenant, she explained that she is still adjusting to the move as a single mother of 3 and learning to maintain such a large property, which is COMPLETELY UNDERSTANDABLE.

We worked out a payment plan for the lawn-care cleanup and devised another plan for her to either get a w**d wacker or hire my team to handle the lawn maintenance going forward.

Sometimes 2nd Chance Housing Providing is simple: “Somebody w**d wacks, while the other mows!” 😂🌿🏡

1st Single Family Home I purchased and renovated in my early 20s.

Many people don’t know this, but 20+ years ago, I purchased and renovated my very first house. I did a lot of the work myself and was even a landlord that house-hacked and rented rooms (periodically).

Seeing that it was sold in 2017 still looking almost exactly the same is both funny and amazing. It’s pretty cool to see that something I put so much work into all those years ago has stood the test of time!

When we started this business in 2018, many told us to do it their way—buy cheaper homes in less desirable areas because “you aren't going to live there anyway.”

BUT we had a different vision: buy and renovate homes in neighborhoods where we would live and provide quality housing to second-chance tenants.

Some thought our idea was ludicrous because we actually stay in each home before placing it on the market to make sure it meets our standards. We were also adamant about choosing safe locations, especially knowing that our Child, Children, or Family would eventually take over the business.

For the first seven years, we built this business almost entirely through word of mouth—and we’ve been blessed with a steady stream of Tenants (some new and some who returned) who continually want to rent from us.
