STRATEGIC RETIREMENT PLANNING DURING DIVORCE

Most people going through divorce instinctively fight to protect their retirement accounts at all costs.

And I understand why.

A 401(k), pension, or IRA represents years — sometimes decades — of hard work. It feels like security.

But here’s the question very few people stop to ask:

Is protecting retirement at all costs actually the smartest long-term financial move?

In this short video, I talk about why net worth alone isn’t the full picture — and why liquidity, cash flow, and overall financial design often matter more in a Texas divorce.

Sometimes the strongest strategy isn’t winning every dollar.

It’s building a smarter financial future.

If this topic is relevant to you — or someone you know — watch the video below.

And if you’d like a deeper explanation of how retirement accounts are handled in Texas divorce, along with practical strategy considerations, visit my website for more detailed articles:

Valentine’s Day isn’t just about roses and dinner reservations anymore — it’s also about what’s happening on your phone after the lights go out.

Late-night messages. “Harmless” flirting. Deleted DMs. Hidden accounts.

What feels private in the moment can quickly become public in a Texas divorce courtroom.

Before you hit “post” or reply to that message, it’s worth understanding how social media activity can affect property division, credibility, and even custody issues.

I’ve written a new article on how online behavior is increasingly showing up as evidence in divorce cases — and what you should know before it does.

Some divorce cases look unwinnable from day one.

The facts are ugly.
The emotions are raw.
The other side is loud, aggressive, or flat-out reckless.
And sometimes the court forms an opinion before you ever get a fair chance to speak.

That’s usually the moment people are told to “just settle” or “lower expectations.”

I don’t buy that.

Over the years, I’ve seen cases that looked doomed turn around—not because of theatrics, but because of disciplined strategy, hard work, and a clear understanding of how Texas courts actually decide cases.

I just published a new article breaking down how difficult divorce cases are won—including:
• why credibility matters more than outrage
• how bad facts can sometimes be used to your advantage
• when litigation helps—and when it hurts
• and why “winning” doesn’t always look like what people expect

If you’re in the middle of a tough divorce—or worried you’re already behind—this is worth reading.

💔 When Divorce Turns Into a Battle of Egos — Here’s What’s Really Going On

Most people think a divorce fight begins when someone files papers at the courthouse.
But the truth is — it usually starts long before that moment, when one spouse feels unseen, dismissed, or devalued.

In my latest blog and video, I break down how ego and self-worth quietly drive many of the emotional explosions we see in Texas divorce cases — and how understanding this dynamic can actually save you time, money, and peace of mind.

You’ll learn:
✅ Why most “legal” conflicts are really emotional ones.
✅ How protecting dignity leads to better legal results.
✅ The psychology behind destructive divorce behavior — and how to stop it.

Whether you’re thinking about divorce or already in the middle of one, this insight could change how you handle everything from texts to courtroom strategy.

📅 Texas Family Law Spotlight — November 4, 2025: Proposition 15 and Parental Rights

Today, November 4, 2025, Texas voters are deciding on Proposition 15 (Senate Joint Resolution 34) — a proposed constitutional amendment affirming that parents are the primary decision-makers for their children.

If approved, this amendment would add Article I, Section 37 to the Texas Constitution, formally recognizing that parents hold a fundamental right to direct the care, custody, and upbringing of their children. In plain terms, it gives constitutional weight to what Texas courts have long presumed: that parents, not the government, should decide what’s best for their children unless proven unfit.

💡 Why This Matters for Texas Families

For parents in Galveston County, League City, Friendswood, and the greater Houston area, Proposition 15 could reinforce existing protections in custody, education, and medical-decision disputes. While it does not create new rights, it strengthens parental authority by enshrining it in the state’s highest legal document — the Constitution.

Even without the “strict-scrutiny” language that was removed before passage, courts traditionally treat parental rights as fundamental. That means future custody or conservatorship cases may see greater judicial deference to fit parents’ decisions about their children’s welfare and upbringing.

⚖️ The Palmer Law Firm Perspective

As a family law firm serving families in Galveston, Harris and the surrounding counties, we’re closely monitoring Proposition 15 because it could shape the way courts interpret joint managing conservatorship, medical authority, and parental decision-making rights under the Texas Family Code.

💔 “Grey Divorce” — Why More Couples Over 50 Are Calling It Quits

It may surprise you to know that divorce rates among adults over 50 have doubled since 1990, and for those over 65, they’ve tripled, according to the Pew Research Center.

Sociologists call it “grey divorce.” It’s becoming more common as people live longer, retire earlier, and rethink what they want from the rest of their lives.

A few key factors researchers have identified:

📊 Longer life expectancy means many people don’t want to spend decades in an unfulfilling relationship.

💼 Financial independence—especially among women—makes it easier to start over.

🧍‍♂️ Empty nests often bring hidden marital cracks to the surface once the kids are grown.

💬 Cultural acceptance of divorce has reduced the stigma once associated with separation later in life.

But “grey divorce” comes with its own set of challenges: dividing retirement accounts, adjusting Social Security benefits, downsizing, and rebuilding emotionally and socially after decades together.

The takeaway?
Even if love doesn’t last forever, dignity and respect still can. The more informed you are, the better you can navigate this stage of life.
