Today, we are pleased to announce a favorable outcome for a client charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter. Despite the State's request for a 15-year sentence with five years of incarceration, we successfully advocated for a sentence that allows our client to continue her recovery journey. Our client, struggling with fentanyl addiction, had purchased drugs for herself and her brother, who tragically overdosed. Although the police charged her under a statute seemingly inapplicable to this situation, we were able to demonstrate her commitment to recovery. Following an arduous process that included detoxification in custody and subsequent residential rehabilitation, our client has maintained sobriety for 18 months. The judge, taking into account testimony from her recovery circle and professional affiliations, crafted a sentence balancing fairness and rehabilitation. We commend our client's progress and appreciate the court's leniency. This case exemplifies our dedication to supporting individuals struggling with addiction, and we pray for her continued success in recovery. For those grappling with addiction, we urge you to seek help, as recovery is attainable.
