Medicare Before Turning 65
Many people are surprised to learn that being approved for Social Security Disability benefits does not always mean Medicare starts right away.
For individuals approved for SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance), Medicare eligibility typically begins after a 24-month waiting period from the disability entitlement date. Once eligible, coverage generally includes:
• Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
• Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
However, SSI (Supplemental Security Income) benefits do NOT provide Medicare coverage. In most states, individuals approved for SSI may instead qualify for Medicaid based on income and resources.
There are also exceptions to the Medicare waiting period for certain medical conditions, including ALS and End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
Understanding the difference between SSDI, SSI, Medicare, and Medicaid can be confusing. Our office is here to help guide clients through the disability process and answer questions along the way.
