Heirloom seeds and plants are open pollinated and genetically diverse. They enable us to save and adapt our crops for flavor, productivity, disease resistance, and important regional and seasonal variations. Many hybrids are genetic clones adapted for agribusiness requirements to withstand harsh chemicals, uniformity, mechanical harvest, shipping, and storage...traits which don't allow us to save our own seeds or respect our cultural inheritance of carefully chosen seeds handed down from our ancestors. This is a great time of year to sit back with some herbal tea and explore seed catalogs. Check out the links below to explore some of my favorite seed sources and share your favorite heirloom seed companies too.

NASHVILLE —The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) is accepting grant proposals for projects that will help improve water quality by reducing nonpoint source (NPS) pollution in the state. For the first time, incentives will be given to projects located in both economically distressed and at-risk counties.

“With this cost-share support, we’re helping Tennesseans take direct action to improve water quality,” said Commissioner Andy Holt. “These projects make a lasting difference by reducing runoff, restoring watersheds, and supporting healthier ecosystems for people, wildlife, and future generations.”

Tennessee's Native Oak Treasures 🌳

Did you know Tennessee is home to an incredible variety of native oak species? These massive trees are not only beautiful – they play a vital role in supporting our ecosystems and economy.

From providing food and shelter to wildlife to improving air and water quality, oaks are true champions of nature! 🦉🦌🌱

Here are some native oaks you should know about:

Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor)
White Oak (Quercus alba)
Overcup Oak (Quercus lyrata)
Swamp Chestnut Oak (Quercus michauxii)
Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra)
Black Oak (Quercus velutina)
Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa)
Chestnut Oak (Quercus montana)

Each species has its unique charm, from its leaves and acorns to its autumn colors. Together, they make Tennessee's forests and communities beautiful.

The Tennessee Division of Forestry is dedicated to spreading awareness and promoting the conservation of these spectacular native oaks.
