A new way of estate planning: 1) Ensuring your loved ones will stay out of court and conflict in the event of your death or incapacity; 2) Ensuring your children are taken care of by the people you want, in the way you want, no matter what happens.

Your backup beneficiary is not a backup detail.
You named your spouse first and your young children second. The form looks finished.

But if your spouse cannot receive the benefit, who could legally receive and manage your children’s shares?

Insurers generally do not pay proceeds directly to minors. Depending on state law and the arrangements in place, a court-appointed guardian or another authorized structure may be needed. A properly designed trust is one option.

Naming an adult instead, with a promise to “use it for the kids,” is not the same arrangement. That promise does not create the duties and safeguards of a trust.

I want your backup choice to work in practice, not simply look complete on screen. The article explains what to review before changing the form, including who receives the money and how your children would be supported.

Maybe you want your spouse to take six months away from work. Maybe you want your children’s care funded without handing them a lump sum before they are ready.
Those are different jobs. The beneficiary decision should reflect them.

I help you connect your policy, trust, backup choices, and other resources with the people you love. We look at who receives the money and how they can use it, working with your insurance and tax professionals where needed.

Your Life & Legacy Plan is not a pile of separate forms. It is a coordinated set of choices about your family’s future.

Our ongoing relationship helps keep those choices aligned when your family changes. Let’s start with what you want the money to make possible.

You bought the policy. Now, who should receive the money?
Your spouse? Your trust? Neither answer is automatically better.

In this week's blog post, I’m looking beyond the coverage amount: who needs support, who will manage the money, and what happens if your first choice cannot receive it. Start with your family, not a checkbox.

Do you or your spouse have children from a previous relationship? “Everything to my spouse” deserves a second question.

If your spouse inherits and dies shortly afterward, their estate plan may direct those assets to different recipients than you expected.

Your children’s inheritance deserves a deliberate answer. This week’s article explains why the survival period and backup beneficiaries need to fit your family.

You know why you want your spouse supported, your children protected, or a particular asset kept in your family. The people administering your plan should be able to understand those intentions too.

I help you connect them to the trust, will, account ownership, and beneficiary forms. If deaths happen close together, your family needs to know which instructions apply and who can help carry them out.

Your Life & Legacy Plan brings those choices into one coordinated picture. Our ongoing relationship helps keep it aligned as your family and assets change.

The relationship doesn’t end when the documents are signed. When something happens, your family knows to call me.
