Jobs and More Jobs

The highly anticipated April jobs report is in.

On Friday, Wall Street announced that payrolls for the month increased by 175,000, below the 240,000 estimate from the Dow Jones consensus.

The unemployment rate is tied with the highest level since January 2022.

Why does it matter? Jobs are an important measurement of economic health and the Fed keeps a close eye on the numbers. For much of the past two years, the Fed was trying to cool the jobs market so that inflation would follow.

The Fed's Balancing Act

Yesterday, the Fed concluded its two-day policy meeting.

The Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady, choosing not to lower rates as it deals with inflation that has proven to be resilient.

The federal funds rate will remain at a range of 5.25% - 5%, where it has stayed since July 2023 when the Fed last hiked rates.

"The Committee does not expect it will be appropriate to reduce the target range until it has gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward 2 percent," the Fed’s statement said.

"I think it's unlikely that the next policy rate move will be a hike," Powell told reporters.

🔑 Key points: Chairman Powell made it clear in his post-decision press conference that the Fed will not lower rates until inflation confidently comes down. Powell still expects inflation to decrease, mainly because he expects shelter costs to cool down soon.
