Happy Law Day! Law Day is celebrated every May 1, and on Law Day we celebrate the importance of the rule of law and the American legal system as a whole. This year’s theme for Law Day is Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility, and Collaboration.

The first element, civics, is critical to democracy. Civics focuses on understanding how the government functions and the privileges and obligations of each citizen in a democratic society. We need to rebuild trust in our institutions.

The second element, civility, is a foundation for democracy. We don’t expect everyone to agree in a democracy; but if we are to function, we must foster healthy debate and be respectful and courteous in public discourse.

The third element, collaboration, is a cornerstone of democracy. This part of the theme for Law Day focuses on the importance of working together across different sectors. We are always more powerful when we work together.
