Externship opportunity. Judge Bell is looking for students to work on post-conviction writs see description of the project below. She is committed to also assigning other substantive projects to students that hopefully will result in a writing sample. They may want some interaction during the day but are willing/open to evening and weekend hours as well.

This may be an ideal opportunity for a Part time student who has one day free and some additional time in off-hours. This may also be counted as a 2 credit externship (only 92 hours). This would be great for a student interested in criminal law.

The externship is in Department 7 with Judge Bell. The student would work with the judge and her law clerk, Veronica Fink (Boyd Alumni). It would be at the RJC building. They do approximately 2 Saturdays a month and some evenings but are willing to work with a students schedule as well.

Project Description:

The review of Post-Conviction Writs for Habeas Corpus as well as assistance drafting the orders in regards to these petitions. The review process involves looking at the petition, the AG’s response, the minutes, and often finding deficiencies in the record that need to be addressed as a result of the decision in Williams v. NDOC, 2016 WL 9130953 (Nev. 2017).

Drafting involves the use of a template that is modified to address an inmate’s various arguments. Although not strenuous, it is also not a cookie cutter process and critical thinking is required because of various nuances such as the effect of aggregate sentencing after the Williams decision or multiple offense dates that span the 2007 revision effective date of NRS 209.4465.
