To comment on this tragedy feels somewhat gross and self-aggrandizing. But silence somehow feels worse.

I am a 3x UNLV alum. I spent more than 10 years in BEH/Beam Hall earning the education that enables me to live a life I love. To think that those walls, and those of the student union where I fostered some of the most significant relationships of my life, have been the scene of such horror is unfathomable.

Today, after hearing the alert, I compulsively refreshed the LVMPD Twitter feed, telling myself that the only information I would allow in was from Metro - the horse's mouth. Then I quickly slipped into reading comments and retweets and conspiracy theories and terrible, awful, inhumane things people say in times like this to get a rise out of others. It was toxic and I stopped.

Then I tried to watch this evening's press conference and burst into tears. I'm not ready. I am glad the people I know are safe but am heartbroken for the families that are suffering.

We are resilient. But we shouldn't have to be.
