Jacob Herman was 35 years old and less than a week from walking free.
On July 16, 2025, he was killed inside High Desert State Prison. The Clark County Coroner ruled the cause of death strangulation and the manner of death homicide. His cellmate — a man serving life without the possibility of parole for multiple killings — is identified by authorities as the person responsible.
Now Jacob's family has filed suit in Nevada's Eighth Judicial District Court against the State of Nevada / NDOC and prison leadership. The complaint alleges that:
🔹 Corrections officers were warned days earlier of an explicit threat to kill — yet Jacob was housed in that cell anyway
🔹 A soon-to-be-released man was placed with a violent, life-sentenced inmate
🔹 Chronic overcrowding and understaffing left Jacob with no protection
Jacob's family is seeking accountability so that no other family loses a loved one this way inside Nevada's prisons.
